Dr. Michael Levi

Music Theory

Dr. Michael Levi is Professor of Music at the College of St. Rose in Albany, New York, where he directs the Chamber Choir, teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in Music Theory, Music History and Jazz Studies and also supervises student teachers. He has also taught in public school districts in the Buffalo, New York area. He holds a B.A. in Music Theory from Fredonia State College, and an M.A. in Composition and Ph.D. in Music Education from the University at Buffalo. He has served on the Artistic Faculty and Administrative Staff of the New York State Summer School of the Arts in Choral Studies.

Active as a guest conductor and clinician, Dr. Levi’s compositions and arrangements have been published by: Alliance Music, CPP Belwin, E. C. Schirmer, E. Henry David, BriLee Music, Lawson-Gould and Northfield Press. In addition, Dr. Levi serves as a consultant to the College Board in the Advanced Placement program. He was co-editor of the publication, Vertical Teams in the Arts: Music Theory, and the author of Working in the Minor Mode: Melodic Minor Scales and Melodic Dictation in the College Board’s Curriculum Module, Minor Matters: Developing Competence in Minor Mode Dictation.

He has served the Advanced Placement program as a Reader, Table and Question Leader and member of the Test Development Committee.

Dr. Levi is an active member of the New York State School Music Association. In addition to NYSSMA, he is also a member of the National Association for Music Education, American Choral Directors Association, College Music Society and the Society for American Music.
